Currency Forecast
EUR/USD : The euro edged higher on Thursday as a sharp drop in Treasury yields amid a risk-off mood weighed on the greenback, while cautious remarks from Federal Reserve officials tempered October hike expectations despite hot inflation data.Markets turned risk-off as the hot CPI reading bolstered bets on higher-for-longer Fed rates and revived worries about AI companies' heavy debt burdens, driving safe-haven flows into Treasuries.Market pricing for an October Fed rate hike rose sharply to 50% on the back of the CPI data, before a chorus of Fed officials - including Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman and San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly - said the central bank could wait for a clearer picture ahead of the October 27 and 28 meeting, tempering those bets. The market's focus will now shift to US producer price and retail sales data later in the day, with the former expected to show a jump in business costs last month. Immediate resistance can be seen at 1.1250(38.2%fib), an upside break can trigger rise towards 1.1285(SMA 20).On the downside, immediate support is seen at 1.1118(23.6%fib), a break below could take the pair towards 1.1035(Lower BB).
GBP/USD: The pound edged higher after UK economy beats forecasts in August. The UK economy expanded by 0.1% month-on-month in August, defying economists’ expectations of a 0.1% contraction, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Thursday. However, growth slowed sharply from July’s revised 0.4% expansion. The stronger performance was partly supported by upward revisions to services-sector output in June and July, highlighting greater resilience in the UK’s dominant services industry.Information and communications output increased by 2.8% over the three-month period, marking its fastest pace of growth in more than three years. The improvement provided support to overall economic activity, although the slowdown in monthly GDP growth suggests that the recovery remains uneven. Immediate resistance can be seen at 1.3258(SMA20), an upside break can trigger rise towards 1.3295(38.2%fib).On the downside, immediate support is seen at 1.3163(23.6%fib), a break below could take the pair towards1.3123(Lower BB).
AUD/USD: The Australian dollar weakened on Thursday after weaker-than-expected Australian employment data dampened expectations of further Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) interest-rate hikes. Data showed Australian employment fell 39,300 in September, the largest drop since early last year and a shock to analysts who had looked for a rise of 20,000.The jobless rate stayed at a five-year high of 4.7%, with August revised up from an initial 4.6%. That will be a blow to the Reserve Bank of Australia, which had not expected to see 4.7% reached until the end of 2027.Markets reacted by paring the chance of a November rate hike to around 9%, from 32% before the data, while a December move came down to 28% from 56%. Immediate resistance can be seen at 0.69771 (SMA20), an upside break can trigger rise towards 0.7000(Higher BB).On the downside, immediate support is seen at 0.6949 (Lower BB), a break below could take the pair towards 0.6912(23.6%fib)
USD /JPY : The US dollar slipped lower against the yen on Thursday after Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama reiterated that authorities were prepared to intervene in the currency market if necessary.Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama warned speculators that authorities were ready to intervene in the currency market again if necessary, after the yen weakened to its lowest level against the dollar this month following hotter-than-expected US inflation data. She reiterated that the US and Japanese authorities remained aligned in their stance following their joint action to strengthen the yen in July. Meanwhile. Bank of Japan board member Junko Koeda said on Thursday that the central bank should not be overly cautious about raising interest rates, citing significant upside risks to inflation and signalling the possibility of a near-term rate hike. Immediate resistance can be seen at 158.37(50%fib), an upside break can trigger rise towards 159.23(Higher BB).On the downside, immediate support is seen at 157.68(Daily low) a break below could take the pair towards 156.65(Lower BB).
