EUR/USD : The euro edged higher on Monday as conflict in the Middle East and political uncertainty in Europe kept investors on edged. The European Central Bank is widely expected to raise rates by 25 basis points on Thursday, while investors are focused on U.S. CPI data this week after a stronger-than-expected jobs report boosted expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike this month. Immediate resistance can be seen at 1.1680(38.2%fib), an upside break can trigger rise towards 1.1734(Higher BB).On the downside, immediate support is seen at 1.1656(Daily low), a break below could take the pair towards 1.1585(38.2%fib).
GBP/USD: The British pound firmed on Monday as investors assessed British finance minister John Healey’s first major economic speech, in which he outlined plans to give city regions greater powers to attract private investment while stressing fiscal discipline and efforts to curb rising costs for businesses and households. However, much of his focus on boosting growth, cutting regulation and easing the cost of living largely continued the policies of his predecessor, Rachel Reeves. BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda said last week that policymakers would consider raising rates as early as September, with inflation risks a key factor in the decision. Markets are pricing in a 75% chance of a 25-basis-point hike at the BOJ’s September 18 meeting, with a 60% probability of another increase by December. Meanwhile, Japan’s foreign reserves posted their largest-ever monthly decline in August after authorities carried out another round of record dollar-selling and yen-buying intervention to support the currency.
